‘BMF’ is based on the real-life Flenory Brothers

A passion project of 50 Cent’s, BMF chronicles the real-life story of the Flenory brothers. Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory exploded in the drug game in the ’80s. It was just as crack cocaine was spreading across the country.

At first, the brothers were known for selling $50 bags of cocaine in Detroit while they were in high school. The series will follow their rise in the drug game and hip-hop industry and their eventual fall.

Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory Jr., the son of Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory, portrays his father in the show. All-American alum, Da’Vinchi stars as Terry. The series also includes Russell Hornsby, Michole Briana White, Ajiona Alexus, Wood Harris, Steve Harris, Snoop Dogg, La La Anthony, and Serayah

Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory was worth $100 million at his peak

At the height of The Black Family Mafia, the Flenory Brothers employed upward of 500 people and they were bringing in $270 million in profit. According to Celebrity Net Worth, at his peak, Big Meech was worth $100 million. The brothers built their business in Detroit but had hubs in Atlanta, Georgia, and Los Angeles, California as well.

At their peak, BMF was allegedly moving 2,500 kilos of cocaine in Atlanta alone. Big Meech has been in prison since pleading guilty in 2005 to money laundering and drug trafficking. He is currently slated for release in 2028.

Terry “Southwest” Flenory was worth $100 million at his peak

Though the brothers are now estranged, when they worked together they shared everything. Like his brother, Terry was worth $100 million in his prime. When it came to their enterprise, Terry thought outside of the box. While Big Meech was known for his charisma, Terry was very business-minded, enabling their organization to expand beyond drugs. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2005 but was recently released from prison amid coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns.

Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory Jr. says that reliving his uncle and father’s past in BMF was an emotional experience for his entire family.

“We filmed at my grandmother’s house that my dad and uncle grew up in, and I got to walk the same steps that my father and uncle got to walk,” he told The Detroit News. “My grandmother was actually on set watching us, and everything hit so close to home for her that she couldn’t stop crying.”
