David Luke Flatman, also known as ‘Flats,’ was born on January 21, 1980, in Maidstone, England, and was a former rugby player. He was a prop for the Bath Rugby Club as well as the England national rugby union squad. Bath Rugby has promoted him to the position of head of communications. He began playing rugby union at the age of eight with his hometown club, Maidstone FC, after being inspired by his father, who played as a prop for the team. He played in the same England Schools (18-group) team as Steve Borthwick, Andrew Sheridan (also of Dulwich College), Alex Sanderson, Mike Tindall, and Jonny Wilkinson, all of whom are Dulwich College graduates. For the first time in his career, Flatman visited Australia with England Schools in 1997 and then Argentina with England Colts in 199In the fall of 1998, he played for London & South-West as well as the England Under-21s against South Africa at Wembley Stadium. With Saracens, he started his senior club rugby career in 1998, and he earned his first full caps as a substitute in the Tests against South Africa on the summer tour of 2000, during which he also played in matches against the North-West Leopards and the Gauteng Falcons, among other fixtures. On his second trip with the England team to North America, he filled in for Graham Rowntree in both the Burnaby and San Francisco Tests against Canada and the United States, which were all played in July 2001.
Having played for the A team on a regular basis since making his international debut against France in Blagnac in 2000, he had a lot of knowledge and understanding of the squad. Following his return to the senior squad for the last test of the 2000–1 season against France at Twickenham, he played in a string of seven England A team matches. The next year, he went to Bath, where he quickly established himself as one of the best front row forwards in English rugby union thanks to his outstanding performances as part of a rebuilt Bath pack. If injury had not prevented him from participating in England’s summer tour of New Zealand and Australia, he would very certainly have added to his total of eight caps. Jeremy Flatman announced his retirement from rugby on the 15th of June in 2012.
