Joseph Rodney “Rod” Canion (born January 19, 1945) is an American computer scientist and businessman who works in the field of information technology. Canton is a co-founder and former President and CEO of Compaq Computer Corporation, where he served as the company’s first President and CEO. In 1966 and 1968, Canion received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in electrical engineering with a focus on computer science from the University of Houston. He is a native of Houston and has lived in the city since childhood. C.E. Rosen, who later rose to the position of chairman of the board of directors of Compaq. As Compaq’s CEO, Canion led the firm to establish records for the biggest first-year sales in the history of American business, and the company grew faster than any other company in history to become a member of the Fortune 500 and exceed $1 billion in revenue. He was a timid guy, therefore at the behest of Ben Rosen, the chairman of Compaq, Canion enrolled in courses to improve his public speaking skills. [1] Canion was fired from Compaq by the company’s chairman, Benjamin M. Rosen, in 1991. He established Insource Technology Group with Jim Harris and Ronald L. Fischer in 1992, and he served as its chairman until September 2006, when the company was sold. Questia Media, Inc., which offers an online research library, was founded by him in 1999 and he led the first round of funding for the company. He rose to the position of chairman of the board and subsequently assisted the business in raising $150 million. He is on the boards of directors of AMVESCAP, BlueArc, and Young Life, as well as HealthLink, and is Director Emeritus of the Houston Technology Center.
